Region’s origin of name

Saint Gordios took its name from the church that is found in this region. Because of the Orthodoxy faith of Greek People, each village of Corfu has also a church of the protector Saint of village. Thus, also here the protector was Saint Gordios, who attended the region and gave his name in the locality. In Corfu there are two regions with the same name “Saint Gordios” of South Corfu and “Saint Gordios” of Middle Corfu.

History of region

Saint Gordios is the haven of the village “Palaiochori”. Most properties here belong to the inhabitants of this village. Saint Gordios is the paradise of Corfu because it is a place suitable for peaceful holidays. The beach is about 6 kilometers long. The touristic progress of the region has not been yet developed and the only thing you can find here is a bar restaurant.

Population

During the winter time there is no resident in this region. In contrast to winter time, during the summer time the residents are about 200 people including visitors.

Employment of population before and after the touristic development

The residents of the region formerly occupied professionally with olive groves, farming, agriculture and fisheries. Each family was autonomous and everything that was needed was home made. Today most people deal professionally with tourism during the summer months. During the winter time they deal amateur with agriculture and especially with the olive gathering and fishing.
